The St Sebastian Young Adult Association (SSYAA) of North Canton held a Lenten event on Sunday, April 3rd 2016. Immediately following Divine Liturgy the members, including students from St George in North Canton and St Archangel Michael in Akron, departed for the Catholic Worker in downtown Akron.
Upon arrival, the students received a tour of the two building facility that function together to offer meals to the poor, needy, and homeless in their neighborhood. This organization is runs on a completely volunteer basis and solicits no money for their charitable efforts. Groups like the SSYAA help this mission thrive, and various free-will donations keep food in their pantries.
During this visit, the SSYAA member spent time helping with projects, serving snacks and coffee, and – most importantly – sitting down and talking with the people that were waiting to eat. The SSYAA members were able to meet a number of interesting individuals from the Akron area and listen to their stories.
During their next meeting the students will hold a Lenten cookout and make preparations for their end-of-year trip to Cedar Point.
